Churches exist for many reasons. Some are only concerned with our behavior. Some are only concerned with the afterlife and “where we go after we die.” Some are only concerned with social causes and making the world a better place. Some churches have been hijacked by political parties (conservative or liberal). This begs the question, who decides why the church exists? We believe Jesus shows us what the church is for. In the New Testament, the central theme of Jesus’ preaching is the Kingdom of God. Jesus, the incarnate Son, sent by the Father and empowered by the Holy Spirit; came to Earth not just to modify people’s behavior. He didn’t come just to give us assurance of the afterlife, although He does. He didn’t come just as a moral example, prophet, or sage. Jesus came to begin to set the world right. He came back to His own creation to begin the process of renewing all things, beginning with our broken relationship with Him. Jesus came to invite us into an alternative kingdom to all the kingdoms of this world, where a good king will justly reign forever. In Jesus, God has taken the first step and reached out to us out of His own gracious free will to offer us mercy.
As part of The Diocese Of Churches For The Sake Of Others, our shared mission is to announce, embody, and demonstrate the Kingdom of God.
We desire to see the Kingdom come more fully in West Seattle as it is in Heaven and to see the people of West Seattle grow into the likeness of Christ.
